in 2010 AD, Brian Eno and Karl Hyde performed together at Brighton Festival as Part ofa “This is Scenius” event. The premise for both Hyde & Eno’s performance was to recreate an imagined, but highly probable scenario based in the not too distant future.
A World War 3 scenario; Superpowers have dropped EMP bombs (ElectroMagneticPulse) that wipe Digital Data, whats left of other post apocalyptic hardware is a mess and trying to find those that know or how to repair or archive is impossible. Sonic archaeologists only have scarce 1’s and 0’s left and music media formats from the past (vinyl, tape?!?) to guide them as to what sort of music was being listened to in previous generations….to try and recreate something that probably didn’t exist in a specific timeline…….like listening to hyper glitched ska waltz or post country and dubstep…….
Eno & Hyde's post Scenius albums didn't reflect this scenario, but I may have found something that does, did or will do.........
Scaramanga Silk’s Designer Scribble is an immersive blend of hallucinogenic exotica, taking so many elements of something not quite remembered, triggering Hauntological aspects in memory cores from a period not quite there….it’s definitely electronic, but it’s not a genre that is definite…..that’s not a criticism…it’s imaginative without a doubt......it’s a bit like all your crayons melting on the sun…..
Quite rightly Scarmanga Silk has already delayed releasing this as he felt it was too futuristic in the current climate. Orginally planned for 2021 (come on, we might all be dead by then or at the very worst, trying to scrape bits of musical history into sonic soup), Micro Spiral have persuaded him to release it now. Because of that, we now have some imaginative, intuitive health injected into our neurons and aural receptors.
Technologically, the production is stunning and the whole creation is in so many ways unusual. One striking and prominent aspect is that you don’t consider the compostion/creative process as an obvious distractor…it’s an album to get lost in many many times, without it being categorised ….you cannot categorise Designer Scribble, you just need to imagine and that process is entirely up to you and your point of view….don't wait for an EMP war to give you something new…..
